In the heart of ancient Pompeii, archaeologists have uncovered an extraordinary banquet hall decorated with life-sized frescoes, known as "megalographies." These paintings, adorning three of the room's four walls, portray scenes of initiation into the Dionysian mysteries, reminiscent of those found in the renowned Villa of the Mysteries. The hall was discovered in Insula 10 of Regio IX, a central area of the ancient city. The fresco cycle has been dated to between 40 and 30 BC, during the period when the Second Pompeian Style was prevalent. This finding provides new perspectives on the understanding of ritualistic and social practices in ancient Pompeii, highlighting the significance of mystery cults and convivial gatherings in the domestic sphere of the time.
