The domus is built on two levels; the lower one houses a luxurious underground portico, a cryptoporticus, from which the house gets its name. This provided access to the home's private baths and a living room (oecus). The cryptoporticus is adorned with episodes from the Iliad, and its barrel-vaulted ceiling is decorated with stuccos. The oecus, or living room, boasts a remarkable mosaic floor and was decorated with panels featuring Dionysiac motifs. The upper floor hosts a summer triclinium made of masonry and covered in red plaster. The bodies of several victims of the eruption were found in the house.
