The actual area of the granary is a deposit for material found during the digs but in the past it was the market place for cereal and pulses. That there was no trace of the rendering, gives us the idea that the area was still under construction at the moment of the eruption. The weighing tables where necessary instruments were kept guaranteeing the correct exchange and, above all converting different measurements (weights) from different parts of the Empire into valid weights in Pompei. A tablet with holes where different weights were used, like scales we have today. These operations were carried out under the scrupulous eyes of magistrates, so no cheating could take place.
