The thermal baths, or spas, whatever you want to call them, were situated outside the city walls.  Its nearby port (in fact several large rocks where boats could be moored) these baths were probably used by travelers, and not by the folk of Pompeii.

The building was of 3 storeys, a good Roman design  to get over the different ground levels, this follows this classic idea; the changing room, the cold water bath or spa and the hot tub.

One particular thing about these ‘spas’ 2,000 years ago was that there were many paintings of love scenes.
It was thought that these erotic scenes had something to the prostitution’s goings on, but in actual fact, it was an intelligent way of letting the clients remember where  they had left their clothes?????!!!! It was easier remembering an erotic  scene than a number given!!!
